The Empty Boat

Once upon a time, many years ago, there was a monk who wanted to meditate in complete peace and silence.

So one day, he took a small boat out to the middle of a quiet lake.

He closed his eyes and began to meditate.

For hours, everything was still.

Then suddenly—

Bang!

Another boat crashed into his.

With his eyes still closed, the monk felt his anger rising.

He was ready to open his eyes and yell at the boatman who had disturbed his meditation.

But when he opened his eyes, he saw that it was an empty boat
floating unanchored in the middle of the lake.

No one to yell at.
No one to blame.

In that moment, the monk realized something:

The boat had triggered his anger, but the anger was already within him.

The outside condition didn’t create the anger.
It simply brought out what was already there.

The Empty Boats in Our Lives

Something similar happens in our everyday lives.

Someone says something we don’t like.
Someone treats us unfairly.
Something doesn’t go the way we expected.

Anger, frustration, or hurt arises within us.

The outside situation simply triggers what is already there.

Just like the empty boat.

We cannot always control what happens around us.

But we can learn to let go of what we carry within.

Finding Peace Within

So where can we find lasting happiness and peace?

Not by waiting for everything around us to change.

But by looking within.

At Heartland Meditation, we practice a method that helps us reflect on and let go of the thoughts, emotions, and memories from our past that we carry with us.

As we clear our minds, we can begin to experience the peace and happiness that are already within us.

The world around us may not always be peaceful.
But we can learn to create peace within ourselves.
